Discipleship

‘’Can two walk together, except they agreed?’’[Amos 3:3]. It is quite impossible to claim a follower of a person you cannot emulate and obey. You follow and obey someone by making up your mind to accept the person’s doctrine, lifestyle, rules and commandments. There must be mutual agreement between a master and his disciple and this concord brings about smooth communication and interaction between the Master and His subjects. Jesus Christ is the universal master while believers are universally regarded as His disciples. The question is: are you a disciple in word or in deed? (‘…except they be agreed’) What agreement have you concluded with your master? Or better still, who is your master? Are you serving God or mammon? Or do you claim to serve both?

‘’No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon’’ [Matthew 6:24]. Jesus Christ had already given a mandate on whom to serve, either you serve God you go otherwise serving money, idols, lies, malice and all forms of mammon. There is nothing like partially serving God, hence you will be despised and spewed out [Revelation 3: 15-16]. You have to decide to be a disciple of Jesus or a disciple of mammon.

A disciple is someone who follows the teachings, life, and aim of another until the person becomes like the master. Discipleship in the Christian sense is the process of making someone become like Christ. As a disciple of Christ, you must become like Christ in everything which summarizes you as a Christian [Acts 11:26]. Discipleship means much more than just the transfer of information from a master, it refers imitating the teacher’s life, including his values and replicating his teachings. Therefore, Christian discipleship connotes a relationship with a Master. As a disciple, you have to forego any unclean acts, submit all your totality to the Master, communicate in all mannerism that exalts the Master, sacrifice everything to follow the Master and do as the master commands.

Basics of Discipleship

  • Share the Word. Be bold enough to go into the world and speak about the gospel [Mark 16:15]
  • Show the Word. Once the people put their faith in Christ, we baptize them [Matthew 28:19]
  • Teach the Word [Colossians 3:16, 1 Timothy 4:11]

In summary, discipleship helps believers to grow in their faith, to grow in maturity and wisdom, and build their faith on strong foundation. So that they can discipline and lead others towards Christ.
