THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

The conclusion of chapter four described large crowds traveling considerable distances to hear Jesus’ teaching and see His miracles. The main emphasis of chapter five is on Jesus teaching his disciples. He starts lecturing the crowd on a mountaintop.

Jesus first word in his preaching is the word “Blessed” which also means “Happy”
In Jesus’ sermon, being “blessed” does not necessarily imply being happy. Instead, it involves figuring out what in a person’s life happens to be good and why and Beatitudes: the key features of the blessed, or the blessings themselves.

In Matthew 5:3 says, “Blessed are the poor in  spirit, for theirs is a  kingdom of heaven”
Blessed are the impoverished in spirit. This is not a reference to money or wealth; rather, it is a statement about how the poor in spirit are blessed because they already possess the kingdom of heaven, which will be populated by the humble rather than the haughty. The spiritually poor are so blessed in this manner.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be consoled,” reads the second beatitude.
According to this beatitude, people who grieve are blessed, and Jesus wants His followers to know that those who grieve are not without hope.  Sometimes we grieve for loved ones who have meant a lot to us, and the consolation that God offers cannot make the pain go away or make sense of our grief. God gives us solace by accompanying us on our journey, mending our wounds, and showing kindness.

In a summary in Matthew 5: 3-11, Jesus wanted to remind Christians that their hope is not in what their great God has done or would do, but rather in what He has said and done. He also wanted to show us and the multitudes the way of life. But just because something is novel or unique doesn’t make it important. It is significant because he conveyed God’s mercy and compassion by living it.

Jesus continued by telling his disciples that they were the light of the world and salt of the earth.

We make the world  better by doing things that please Jesus, just as salt improves food’s flavor. In order for us to be a light to the world, we must follow Jesus Christ and His teachings and examples.

Matthew 5:17-18
“17 Don’t think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; rather, I have come to fulfill them.

18 For in truth, I say to you, until all of the law is completed, whether it is in heaven or on earth, not a single word or title shall depart from it.”

Here, Jesus fulfills the law and Jesus says, “I am coming to fulfill all that was delivered to you through Abraham, Moses, and the prophets.” Jesus wants to guarantee that  we understand the teachings of the Old Testament matter. Many of Jesus’ listeners may have believed that Jesus was against the official Jewish teaching of the day, or against the teaching of the law and prophets. However, Jesus did not come to work around the law, but to perfectly obey and fulfill it. They were important at the time of Moses, during the time of Jesus, and they are still important today.

Continuing in Matthew Chapter 5, Jesus also speak about Murder and Anger, about committing adultery and also mentioned of loving your neighbor and hate your enemy”

As God intended, obeying the sixth commandment also means not harboring improper anger. Although anger and murder are not exactly the same, both are sins. Christians should strive for peace, both with God and with other people. The seventh commandment, which forbids adultery, calls on people to manage their thoughts and feelings before the potential for physical adultery arises, in addition to not committing physical transgression.

The Sermon on the Mount was ended by Jesus Christ with the teachings that the path to eternal life is narrow and that those who do the will of the Fat犀利士 her in Heaven are those who enter the kingdom of heaven.
